about

20 years ago to the day, my first album 'Residue' by Hefner was originally released on 27.10.00, and is now available digitally for the first time on all streaming/download platforms.

The late 90's were an exciting time for me in London. My first few records, which I made in my bedroom on an Atari ST and an AKAI S950 sampler, were supported by the likes of Gilles Peterson, John Peel, Mixmaster Morris and Patrick Forge. I DJ'd monthly at Plastic People with The Cinematic Orchestra, remixed the likes of Zero 7, Fink and Lamb. A publishing advance helped me expand my 'studio' with a PC and S3000 sampler, allowing me to record vocals with singer Josée Hurlock. We made the album together and then toured around Europe with a band, playing some 60 shows, including London's Jazz Cafe, the North Sea Jazz festival, and 2 sessions on the BBC for Gilles. Whilst all of this was an unforgettable adventure, none of it was making me any money. I'd had critical acclaim, but no big hit, and surviving in London was impossible. I tried to make a second album, but the label I was signed to weren't satisfied with anything I gave them. Neither was I to be honest. I started to crack under the pressure.

In late 2002, broke and disillusioned, I moved (fled!) to Berlin where I quickly found success playing live and DJing house and techno in clubs like Berghain and Watergate, and then all over the globe. I planned to return to Hefner, but the DJ gigs paid the rent and life just got in the way. It was also immensley good fun.

Now in 2020, with no gigs due to the pandemic, I find myself at another crossroads. I've founded the label Mad As Hell to distribute the old catalogue, and I've reconnected with some old acquaintances... including my brother, AKA Victor Malloy. We'll release our first collaboration in nearly 20 years next month; the Pablo/Dead Man E.P. which certainly nods to the old Hefner sound.

As for Hefner, the story is not finished... to be continued!
